December in the greenhouse
The final month of the year brings short days, just 28 hours of sunshine and an average temperature of around 2.3°C. Although the cold has arrived, the greenhouse does not have to go into hibernation. On the contrary, it can become a cosy retreat at Christmas, offering shelter from the cold and a peaceful place to unwind. Make it extra inviting with lights, blankets and Christmas decorations, and use the greenhouse as a unique place to gather with family and friends. Once the Christmas festivities are over, December is also a good time to tidy up and prepare the greenhouse for the next season.

GREENHOUSE MAINTENANCE
Have you made your greenhouse ready for winter? As the cold weather approaches, it is important to prepare the greenhouse so it can withstand the winter weather. If you have automatic window openers, unscrew the cylinder from its bracket so the window cannot open.
Then secure the window with a cable tie so the wind cannot blow it open. See the video below to learn how to prepare your automatic window openers for winter.
Remember to lubricate locks, cylinders, sliding rails and other moving parts a couple of times a year with acid-free oil. Keep the sliding rails clean and pay particular attention to maintenance if your greenhouse is located near the coast.

GREENHOUSE TASKS
- If December brings snow, keep an eye on your greenhouse. Make sure too much snow does not build up on the roof, as the weight can cause damage.
- Ventilate the greenhouse on clear days and check on your overwintering plants at the same time.
- Prune the grapevine – this is important for next year's yield. Pruning can also prevent the plant from bleeding sap.
- Empty any pots that are not frost-proof and store them somewhere dry.
- In general, reduce watering of potted plants during the dark winter months – especially plants brought in from the garden to overwinter in the greenhouse.
GARDENING TIPS
December is a quiet month in the garden, but there are still a few important tasks to take care of. Garden birds need food and fresh water every day, especially when frost sets in. Make sure to keep the bird feeder topped up and the water free from ice so the birds have access to what they need.
Tender plants should also be protected from the winter cold by covering them or moving them to a more sheltered spot. If you have older apple or pear trees, December can be a good time to prune them.
The same applies to several fruit bushes, which can benefit from a light prune.
